I hate to say it but... DAMN MICROSOFT! This appears to be an even bigger dick move than when Nintendo revealed the GBA SP on January 14th. Everyone with their shiny new 360s for christmas are letting out a collective "the hell?" Okay, a bit of an exaggeration.
This is great that Microsoft is stepping up to acknowledge the need for HDMI for true 1080p output. Especially considering, due to the hollywood standards, many HDTVs actually lock out 1080p unless the signal comes from an HDMI cable. But the question that remains now is, what about all those people who already own a 360 (like myself)? It's unlikely that we'll see a discount on the upgrade (esepcially considering the same price I would spend on a Microsoft 20GB HD equals a 160GB for my PS3). In fact, while Engadget is expecting a static price, I'd say this is the often mentioned prelaunch "third option" with a price likely comparable to the baseline PS3.
One thing is certain, though. While the media and websites don't consider PS3 a threat to 360, Microsoft obviously does. I can't help but think how the consumers will feel in the inevitable arms race to continue.

We will see if they unveil the new 360 at CES. With so many rumors floating around about HDMI, I did not cover this on purpose..
1080p is not really needed.. Sony has overblown 1080p completely as all they really want to sell 1080p Bravia's. To enjoy 1080p at the average/recommended viewing distance (8 to 10 feet), you must have a display that is 70 inches or more. Anything less is wasting pixels as the eye cannot tell the difference on smaller screens due to pixel size. All of these 37 and 42 inch 1080p HDTV's are useless unless you plan to sit less then 3 feet from the display. Everyone needs to learn to enjoy 720/1080i. Good 1080i sources are nearly identical to 1080p (as they come from the same source). This is more about MS adding "digital connectivity" then supporting 1080p. The first decision they made was the smarter one as they have given HDMI time to settle (some handshake bugs still exist). Sony's rush to support HDMI resulted in their oversight of "no scaler" in the PS3 (which was far more important - bad business move).
