Anyone know what may cause this? Is the cable box just junk?

Unforunately the Digital output on many boxes have this issue. On the Comcast DVR, Component is better than HDMI. True, HDMI should look better but it depends on the hardware and then implementation. To be truthful, Component still provides excellent quality (so no worries). Maybe the Cable companies will get it right soon.
