Thumbs up Worms HD, quickie review!!

While I wouldn’t usually review an arcade game, this one certainly needs some love. It’s a classic, it’s like Pong or Space Invaders. It’s one of the best turn based strategy games around, it has spawned many, many titles, and it is imbedded in the mysterious sub-culture of the hardcore gamer. This game above all else is what a good multiplayer strategy game is all about. It’s the pinnacle of 2D…I spent countless hours playing this game with my friends and they spent countless more hours than I ever did playing this game. They were certainly hooked, they got me hooked, and I've been playing it ever since. For that I say thank you.

….Until Worms HD was released, what in the hell happened!?!?!?!! Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always enjoyed the game, and I’m sure with it’s updated graphics and the pretty looks it should be a big hit, right?….Well…I don’t know. They omitted a ton from this game. So many weapons are missing; some missing that actually boggle my mind. The game is missing such classic weapons as The Little Old Lady, Baseball Bat, Super Sheep, and the Holy Hand Grenade, the HOLY HANDGRENADE?!?!?!!? The Drill, The Bungie Cord, and others I can’t quite remember??!?! I don’t get it. I know the space constraint was supposedly an issue, but it was only a 42 meg download. So why couldn’t they have popped in a couple more weapons?

Also, the three backgrounds and the few character profiles are much to slim. I mean give me a freaking break English, French, Spanish, and German player profiles?!?! Oh wait I forgot, French 2. The game play is spot on, it looks good, but…it’s missing its oommf. It’s missing its pizzazz. That pizzazz is the varied backgrounds, varied music, varied profiles, and varied weapons. I just don’t understand it.

What is up with the crap multiplayer? I had so many dropped games and freezes with this game, I can’t believe they were saying it was completed and it was MS’s fault for certification. If it’s that stringent, why release crap like this? I haven’t seen a network game this bad since…since Compuserve ran a game service over 2400 baud modems nearly 20 years ago!!! It’s that freaking terrible!!!

The game is 800 Microsoft points, I’ve never figured out the math, so I’m not quite sure how much that equals. I put in $25.00 worth of points, I get 2000, so I have 1200 left over, I don’t know…that’s like $10.00 or something? It’s not worth it, unless you’re super hardcore. They omitted way too much from this game. I’m not too happy I bought it. I hope to everything on God’s green earth, that they release some expansion packs to bleed us dry, because the shit it bananas, B-A-N-A-N-A-S!!!

With all this hype about Xbox Live arcade at the 360’s release and only having a few gems out of the 30 or so titles…the certification process being notoriously slow, and the Nintendo Virtual Console having a plethora of releases each week, it seems to me that this service could become extinct like the brick and mortar arcades from my youth! MS, if you’re listening stop giving us crap like “Root Beer Tapper” and And more things like Geometry Wars, Hexic HD, Super Street Fighter II…and also please fix Worms HD!!! It’s much to classic of a title to have it bastardized like this!!!
