Mark Cuban talks Hi-Def
Are there any other self-proclaimed tech geeks out there that love WIRED Magazine as much as I do? Check out what they had to say about Mark Cuban and HDTV:

Last fall, in a blog post called “The Coming Golden Age of Television,” Cuban refined this argument into an HD manifesto. “In HD households, rather than a 150-channel universe, there may be only a 30-channel HD universe,” he asserted. “That’s a gold mine for those networks in HD.” Not only will their program ratings shoot up, he maintains, but the ads they carry will have more viewers too, because very few of those ad-skipping DVRs that people have will now work in hi-def. As for networks that don’t go HD – either because they rely on old video that can’t be satisfactorily converted or they simply don’t get with it in time – they’ll be relegated to what Cuban calls “a standard-definition ghetto” of ratings-challenged also-rans. In short, he suggests, HD will turn back the clock a couple of decades – before TiVo, before satellite, before the head-long proliferation of digital cable and satellite channels, when the network sitcom and the 30-second spot reigned supreme.

Mr. Cuban keeps cropping up in everything I read and almost everything I'm interested in seeing (big and little screens)! I want desperately to hate him (jealousy, I know) but I can't help but bow down in awe of the digital momentum he's started re: 2929 Entertainment, HDNet and Landmark Theaters. He blows a lot of hot air all over the place and it sorta fogs up my rose-colored glasses. Nonetheless, WIRED finds him worthy and so shall I.
As for the cable TV dilemna...I think cable companies can't cater to the HD niche without sacrificing a bit...and they're not ready for a committed relationship. Perhaps DirecTV will continue to service us best and steal the market 10 years down the road. Seriously though, eventually we'll just be watching TV off the internet anyway...cable, schmable.
