2K Sports Releases All Pro Football 2K8
I didn't see or recall any info for the game so I figure I'd put some out there.
First the bad news: 2K is "so-so" about the reception of their latest football game by the public. While sales aren't in the tank their not exactly soaring either. More info can be found here: Take-Two: Kinda Happy, Kinda Sad About All-Pro Football : Next Generation - Interactive Entertainment Today, Video Game and Industry News Now the good news: If this game hasn't seen the inside of your next gen console you are missing out on football greatness. 2K IS back and the game is solid. While not being a fan of franchise in my football games the lack of it is evident. Even to me. Just miss seeing that option in the menu if for no other reason. Those who play it religously will be disappointed even more. Why? Well why will come later. There IS a season mode however to hold you on and give you a little fix of a structure instead of just playing quick game after quick game. The AI seems to "scout" you in this mode so gamers will really enjoy that. You may run buck wild with OJ Simpson the first couple of games in your season but once your future opponents have figured out that's all you got they WILL stop it if they can. They've been watching you from the stands, buddy. They ain't falling for that mess. Online hasn't skipped a beat from what we all know and love and this time around they went one better. Instead of your normal "Beginners" "All-Pro" "Legend" and "Custom" lobby we now get the option for a 10 minute quarter All-Pro and Legend lobby. I haven't seen many in there but something tells me thats the place to be. League play is there although I've yet to play my first league game. There seems to be some issues although I'm not clear on them. One issue people are having is not having the ability to trade. However the Legend structure and the fact that you make your team to begin with really invalidates that claim in my opinion. But that's me. There's also some talk that the league webpages may have been hastily put together on the frame of NHL 2K7/8. I've yet to see this and will report if it is or isn't really true or an issue. Now, earlier I said people of franchise will be even more disappointed that that mode is not included. Why? Quite simple: A GAME THAT PLAYS THIS FREAKING GREAT SHOULD HAVE EVERY AND ANY MODE AVAILABLE! Here's the part of the "review" you're looking for. Gameplay is outstanding. This is more than just NFL 2K5.2. This is it's own game. First thing off is controls. If you think NFL 2K5 you'll do ok but wont do great as things are a bit different. The best way to think of the game is it's more like the football version of NBA 2K7. Momentum is KEY in this game and so are assignments. Just like the laws of physics objects tend to want to do what they are already doing. So it is with this game. As long as you keep that in mind you'll be fine. The Legends and generics work well together also. You get your pick of 11 Legends. 2 Gold, 3 Silver and 6 Bronze. The rest of the squad gets filled in with generic players. You do have some say on what kind of generics they are package-wise at least. You can pick a group of LB's who concentrate on the run more that the pass or balanced or whatever. The difference between legends are also noticeable. Dan Marino is better than Hostetler, no doubt and it shows. However nobody is unstoppable. Thats the key to the game and what makes it work. A generic player can pick off Marino. I've done it a few times. Then on the other had Marino can get it between defenders making them look stupid. The animations are plentiful in the game. I guarantee in your first game you'll see some things you never seen in any game before this...... cont. Stay tuned for part 2 of this "review" if people are interested. |

Well , even though people haven't exactly crammed my PM box with requests for part 2 of my review (as in zero requests, lol) I figure I give it to you anyway. And here's the conclusion of APF2K8: A bridge too far. lol j/k
Well I left off with animations and so I'll begin. There are a ton of new animations in the game. Things you've never seen in a football game EVER before. WR's putting the moves on defenders at the line and leaving them looking stupid trying to get up and get after that WR. QB's slipping and tripping over their own men when dropping back. Realtime injuries, men pulling up lame during the play limping around trying to at least finish the play. There's just so many that even to this date I'll stop the action just to see the more elusive ones. It's best to play games in the weather (which unfortunately is not available online, 2K PATCH THIS PLEASE). Rain and snow and the like just makes the game take on a whole new dimension. Animations also look off when they are out of place, a testament to how great the animations are. For instance, after the injury animations (which are cool) they all end with the player lying prone on his back. No matter what the injury is. These are small things and do not take away from the experience at all. Sound is really good. Good chatter going on the field. Surround sound is great, bust through the line for a good run and you can hear the guys behind you still mixing it up. Fireworks , crowds all of that comes through nicely on the old 5.1 Commentary is basically NFL 2K5.1 , I'll have to admit. There is new stuff and it sounds good to hear it when it comes through but alot of it is rehashed from NFL 2K5, ALOT of it. Still, for those of you who never played NFL 2K5 is brand new for you for those of us who are vets , new dialogue? "You can't coach that" Ok, now back to the online league. Wow, disaster. They really slipped out the gates with that. All leagues seem to have one problem or another. The ones I'm in had an issue with some gamers not having the correct team and to add insult to injury having all their players on the wrong side of the ball. So Too Tall Jones would suddenly be a Guard or TE. And Otis Anderson would suddenly be a safety. 2K is known for excellent league play and being able to administer and make changes via a website. However, any league settings will have to be done at the console as the league site shows a NHL 2K setting page. So "turning off icing" won't have much affect on a football game I wouldn't think. Once they do get up and running it's alot of fun. However the problem now is the backlash, or rather the lack of interest with the bad start with the leagues. It's still worth a shot. Online lobby play is what it is. Good games to be had and bad ones. Cheesers and cheaters exist so buyer beware. FG block glitch is just one of a few glitches people will exploit. Fortunately you don't have to pick an opponent blindly. There is a feedback system and a rating. I typically only play people with a 90% or higher feedback rating. In the 80's it's a crap shoot. You can get a good game and you can get a cheesing cheating chump. Anything below 80 and you can expect your gaming experience to be anything but what you'll see in an NFL game on sunday. Speaking of NFL, although the NFL license is nowhere to be found the influence is. There are many people online who have customized their team's uniform to resemble what you see in the NFL. Most look identical to their NFL counterparts except for logos. So on that you'll have to pick as close as you can get. And actually , some are really close enough. All in all the game is worth the price of admission and I highly suggest you pick it up. |
