HD Sports Report #4

HD Sports Report
November 2nd – 6th, 2006

Super Perfection XLI
In a time where dominant NFL teams seem to be a thing of the past, I feel a collision course of history approaching far off on the horizon. I have read numerous sports columns and watched more sports commentary shows over the first 8 weeks of the season than most humans imagine could be possible, but so far no one has dared to dream. Allow me to be so bold. The 18-0 Indianapolis Colts vs. The 18-0 Chicago Bears in SuperBowl XLI.

Yeah I know it’s hard enough for one team to get through the season undefeated let alone two, but why not? I am tired of mediocrity in sports dammit. I am sick to my stomach now that we have had 7 different World Series champions in Baseball over the last 7 years. It blows my mind that warm weather cities not only have hockey franchises but their teams are winning Stanley Cups……Carolina and Tampa Bay holding our last two championships. Huh!?! When did we say it was ok to let teams win that were only allowed to be in the league so good teams could beat up on them year after year?

I say its survival of the fittest and time to end communist sports leagues and those who want all of their teams to be equal so they can spread interest into the smaller markets. I don’t really care if the Buccaneers go 0-16 or that the Lions couldn’t find the end zone unless they were burying Matt Millen in it. We not only need consistency but the return of excellence in sports to offset what seems to be a lot of winning by good fortune (luck). If everything goes to my plan we will have a complete balance of one great Defensive team against a completely dominant Offensive team in the SuperBowl. So let there be light in our NFL season and get us back to a time where complete domination ruled the day…....it’s time for perfection.

I hope that by the time someone is reading this on Monday, I do not look like a complete jackass as the Colts get beat by New England or Chicago gets beat by Miami (Harrington or Culpepper, oh my!)

9 Games to go………
Bears – The Bears have a rough stretch ahead of them after this game against the Dolphins including back to back games at the Meadowlands in New Jersey against the Giants and then the Jets. That doesn’t scare me but two other games scare me quite a bit. November 26th @ Patriots and then Monday night Dec 11 @ Rams. It’s not that both of those teams have the ability to score massive amounts of points on the Chicago D, but rather Rex Grossman has a distinct chance of skirting (my term for sucking in big games i.e. wearing a skirt). Coach Lovie Smith has to keep Rex under damage control against these two teams and then he can let him loose against the rest of the league.

I was supremely impressed during that Monday night game against the Cardinals and how the Defense/Special Teams decided it was time to show up because the offense was still at the hotel sleeping. Brian Urlacher was quoted in the 4th quarter of that game saying “we are going to take the ball from them and score”. You know what they did? The next time the Bears’ Defense stepped on the field they did just that. That type of turn it on, turn it off ability only appears with greatness. Michael’s Bulls, Kobe’s Lakers, and Montana’s 49ers. If they get to December 12th unblemished then one half of our equation is in place. Still that leaves us with one larger unknown………

*short side note here: During Super Bowl XXIII (famous battle with Icky & the Bengals) with about a minute left and the 49ers driving for a game winning score, apparently Joe Montana is in the huddle and everyone on the team was a bit tense. Joe looks up and points behind the end zone and tells everyone
“hey, look guys, it’s John Candy!” Not only is that hilarious but it shows how dominant they were, how they could score whenever they wanted to and most importantly when it counted.

Colts – Can their horrible run defense hold up for 9 more games? My god, my 6 year old daughter has a great chance of breaking at least a 5 yard run against the Colts. She is fast and cuts like Barry Sanders……at least when I am chasing her. One thing that offsets their porous Defense is an unbelievably powerful offense and the most accurate QB of the last 15 years. They overwhelm teams. They score at will. Most of all they just embarrassed supposedly the best Defense in the AFC when they beat Denver last week by scoring at will. It seems that no matter which Defense they run into, no matter which city they play in, the Colts are dialed in. Compared to the Bears, things are much more difficult for the Colts for the rest of the year and you just have to look at their schedule to see why. @Patriots, @Dallas, Philadelphia, @Jacksonville, and then they get Cincinnati week 15. This is not an easy lineup of teams but it’s not impossible at all. The two toughest games for them (Patriots, Jaguars) are very winnable if they execute like they have been over the last 8 weeks. The formula = Pass the ball, Score TD, Repeat.

Call it a dream, call it an alcohol induced fantasy, call it whatever you want but don’t discount the fact that this is not only possible (however improbable) but would leave us with the greatest event in the history of sport. And of course it will be shown in HiDef!

ENOUGH WITH MY RANT, NOW ON TO THE REPORT!
As always this list of HD Sports Programming is shown by day and categorized by sport but…Please check your local listings for channels and availability.
Games and Times are listed in RED.....Games and Times in BLUE are do not miss.

Thursday 11/2/06
NBA
8:00pm EST: San Antonio Spurs vs. Dallas Mavericks TNT-HD in 1080i
Some are billing this as a preview to the Western Conference Finals but I am not completely convinced that Tim Duncan will ever be back to the old Tim Duncan. The constant injuries and wear and tear have slowed him down but I guess even a slower Tim Duncan is better than most players in the league at his position. Thursday night will give us a good indication as to whether or not he is back.

10:30pm EST: Denver Nuggets vs. L.A. Clippers TNT-HD in 1080i

College Football
7:30pm EST: West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Louisville Cardinals ESPNHD in 720P
This is one of the best college football games of the year and everyone is hoping for a repeat of last year’s 3OT game. This should be a really good game but I am cautious with expectations because Thursday night football typically is a let down not only from a viewing perspective but from a betting perspective too. There are some freaky things that happen on Thursday nights……it’s almost as if the football gods do not appreciate a deviation from the Saturday/Sunday plan. Regardless, watch this game then flip over to Spike for the Ultimate Fighter. One of these two programs is bound to be a winner.

Saturday 11/4/06
Horse Racing
12:00pm EST: Breeders Cup World Thoroughbred Championship at Churchill Downs ESPNHD in 720p
Outstanding Event………honestly if you can’t sit down for 2 minutes and watch these amazing animals sprint down a mile and a quarter, then you must enjoy being outside or something. Outside of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and the Belmont, this is the biggest event in horse racing. Kind of like the 4th major championship. If you want my opinion on a bet……whenever there are two top favorites take a serious look at the outside runners. This field is littered with ponies that can run at this distance and most of them will be near the top at the final turn. It’s worth a shot at a long payout here and guess who sticks out of the pack at 30-1 ….the longest shot ever to win the Kentucky Derby (50-1) – Giacomo. It may not be smart money but he is a proven winner at this track. If you win I won’t even ask for a cut.

I really have no idea on their logic with scheduling games. Apparently they are moving their first monday night game when the Bears and Giants get together but why wait? Does anyone who reads this forum actually want to watch this game? Raiders vs. Seagulls? No Hasslebeck, No Alexander, No interest........come on NFL. I would rather watch 2 and a half hours of Hank Williams JR. and his rowdy drunk friends.

I suck.. I had no idea the Colts and Bears are undefeated. Considering I was born in Indy, it is very shameful.

You guys can beat me now!

Yeah this is unbelievably bad. Anybody who watched football this weekend knows the agony of watching mediocre football. We are now completely overrun with fumbles and interceptions and just stupid plays. So embarrassing.....even Giacomo (my one favorite horse this weekend) had a horrible break out of the gate and was last around 3 turns. Then turned it on at the 3/8 pole to finish 4th. I am going to watch Soccer.
