HD Sports Report - Ode to the Office Linebacker
HD Sports Report January 24th – 30th, 2007 I could not believe my ears when I heard some of the plans for SuperBowl ads this week. You have to be kidding me that a guy is going to propose to his girlfriend and pay the $2 Million dollar price tag? Get the hell out of here. Can we bet on this outcome? There is only one way this 30 second spot would be worth watching and that is if she runs out of the room screaming with a resounding NOOOOOOOO!!!!!! I am convinced that I do not belong on this planet or maybe this is a nightmare that I hope to wake up from soon. Just imagine sitting with a large group of friends or bar buddies, expecting something spectacular like the BudBowl or even the stupid Pets.com sock puppet and you get this? I don’t even think women would find this appealing but who knows. To me the mark of a good ad is longevity, how long you laugh when you first see it and how much you keep talking about it long after it’s left your screen. Some have all of the luster of watching Rick Fox get reamed in the rear on the show Dirt (probably the most disturbing image of recent memory) but then again we do get occasional winners like Terry Tate Office Linebacker. ![]() ![]() Right now I get the feeling you are saying “oh yeah that guy who crushed people in the office for Reebok”. Exactly! You mention Terry Tate and watch someone light up with excitement with the usual response of “hey I miss that commercial, can we trade that one for the erectile dysfunction spots?” For those who don’t remember Terry, he was the creation of Reebok for part of their cross training campaign in 2003. Each commercial showed Tate dressed in a football jersey inflicting pain on office personell that made stupid maneuvers like drinking all of the coffee and not making more. These idiots got their due punishment with a nasty de-cleating hit from Tate followed by a tagline………the coffee one gave us the great “You kill the Joe, you make some mo!” Don’t click here unless you want to kill some time because the videos are stellar. Reebok-Terry Tate - Google Video “Terrible” Terry Tate was played by actor Lester Speight who calls himself the Mighty Rasta. LESTERRASTASPEIGHT.COM Even more hilarious than the nickname is one interesting fact that I found. Lester ran for Governor of California during the whole recall thing (eventually Arnold won) but according to one website “Filed to run for Governor of California, but did not complete all necessary paperwork”. I voted for Arnold but I would have at least thought about voting for the Office Linebacker had he put a cover letter on his TPS report. For the Gears of War fans out there he was also the voice of Augustus Cole. In the 4 years since his ad in the SuperBowl I have quoted Tate in my office more than my coworkers appreciate and at times wished he would come flying around the corner for a snot bubble producing hit on some people who will remain nameless. That my friend is the mark of a great advertisement and also a great character. What can we expect this year with the Superbowl commercials…..noone really knows after looking at some of the proposed spots but one thing I do know, it wouldn’t hurt to bring back the pain train. WHOOOO WHOOOOO Pain Time Baby! For those that miss other past commercials check out this link and enjoy! SuperBowl Commercials @ Superbowl-Info.com SuperBowl Giveaway!!!!! If anything check this out while watching the UNC/Wake game on ESPNHD. Other Programming 3:00am EST: BIKINI DESTINATIONS HDNET in 1080i "Moscow - Part history lesson, part current events expedition, post-Communist Moscow serves as one of the most unusual backdrops for Bikini Destinations to date as its models explore the art, architecture, culture and cuisine of one of the world's oldest and largest capital cities. They sample regional recipes, stroll through a mosaic of open-air markets and dance until dawn in its equally colorful nightclubs." Thursday 1/25/07 NCAABB 7:00pm EST: Clemson vs. Duke ESPNHD in 720p Clemson, Clemson, Clemson. I keep hearing about them and how they will make a serious run at the title this year. This is a good test at Cameron indoor with the Dukies running wild. Duke and UNC may be caught in an off year but even in an off year they produce powerhouse teams. Should be a great match-up and the can’t miss game of the night. NBA 8:00pm EST: Dallas Mavericks vs. Chicago Bulls TNT-HD in 1080i 10:30pm EST: N.J. Nets vs. L.A. Clippers TNT-HD in 1080i If the Clippers would get it together this might be a great Thursday night doubleheader. Dallas looks really good again and I always love seeing the top Western Conference teams play the better Eastern Conference teams during the season. Kind of gives you a pre-playoff glimpse and food for thought come post season time. Other Programming 3:00am EST: BIKINI DESTINATIONS HDNET in 1080i "Ukraine - Bikini Destinations journeys deep into the heart of history as the crew uncovers the "real" Ukraine - from Crimea's celebrated vineyards to the imperial palace where the Cold War began. Golf 3:00pm EST: Buick Invitation -- 3rd round - Torrey Pines Golf Club CBS in 1080i This is a momentous occasion. Golf is in HD so lets check it out and see what CBS can do.
