Who's winning?

How about some info with sales data on who is winning...HD-DVD or Blu-Ray? I really want to buy one or the other, but I don't want to be stuck with a BetaMax type player. It would be great if you could have an area dedicated to tracking which format is winning.

Thx,
Matt

No official numbers have been released yet but HD-DVD Players out sell Blu-Ray players 6 to 1. Walk into any store and you cannot find a Toshiba player.. Blu-Rays are stacked in isles. HD-DVD is winning on the image quality front hand down. Blu-Ray image quality is not very good on the Samsung player and Sony/Pioneer have both delayed theirs due to issues (twice). I have compared by Toshiba player to the Samsung and it is a no-brainer.

HD-DVD sports the dual format which allows both standard and Hidef on the same disk. Manufacturing is cheaper and the disks are more durable then Blu-Ray disks (scratch easy).

The decision is getting easier..

Later..

That's something new to me ( I don't own a HD-DVD player). 480i/p is available on HD disks? Could a HD player display correctly on a SD-TV?

Unfortunatly, Sony is going to be "forcing" BluRay players into the homes of PS3 gamers. I know that osme buyers will get the PS3 just for the BluRay, but i think that's the exception, not the rule. So, this christmas, there will be a couple hundred thousand BlueRay players instantly installed in homes. We will see how the movies are sold and marketed to these people, but the PS3 could tip the balance toward BluRay.

sounds like Sony already screwed it up bad. The Talladega Nights Blu-Ray disc that ships with the PS3 supposedly is messed up. Reports say it looks terrible, they might have put a quicky HD transfer out to save money. Which of course is horribly stupid as everyone that buys a PS3 and actually watches it will say the Blu-ray movie doesn't look very good.

oops!

How can Sony win at this point?

I just don't see how Sony can win at this point. They are barely going to have 400K PS3s on shelves this X-mas...that's far less than MS had. Their product is $200 more than MSs. Yes, it includes Blu-Ray drive, but there is alot of debate right now about whether or not BR is even going to be the defacto standard. TO date, HD-DVD has sold more players and discs, and most reviews show their quality as higher.

Xbox360 has a number of great games coming out for the holidays....Gears of War is phenomenal. Most of what is coming out for PS3 is a rehash of stuff that's been out for 6-9 months on Xbox360....and, frankly, it doesn't look or play any better.

If the PS3 is a failure, I suspect Blue-Ray may be too.

Thoughts?

Sony may or may not win but BluRay could definitely have a tough time. They sent out a crappy disc with the PS3, the standalone players are twice that of HD-DVD, and they are basically hoping the PS3 will keep the format afloat. TO people that think that is all it will take, I point to the UMD.....
