Thumbs down MADCATZ/EPIC/Microsoft Game Studios - Gears of War Faceplates review

MADCATZ, EPIC and Microsoft Game Studios have teamed up to bring us some VERY cool XBOX 360 Gears of War faceplates. With GoW being the hottest game this holiday or this year for that fact, we welcome the new Faceplates with "arms wide open". Not many cool faceplates have been released since the 360 hit the gaming scene last November (which blows my mind). Primarily I have been designing my own faceplate skin via “mytego”. Recently I have been using some PREY skins I got from E3 this year. Essentially the PREY skin is going to take a “dirt nap” as Marcus and Dom are taking over my 360 (effective immediately).

There are two faceplate packages available. One package includes a faceplate with Marcus, DOM and the Locust Horde (19.99 MSRP). The other package includes a faceplate with the GoW logo and 2 skins for the top and bottom of your 360 (29.99 MSRP). One skin features Marcus and the other skin features DOM. To be truthful, marketing was trippin when they created these packages. The faceplates need to be switched around (in the packages) as the faceplate with Marcus and DOM should include the skins instead of the skins being included with the generic faceplate with the GoW logo.

These faceplates sport the "Licensed for 360" logo therefore we are guaranteed that the faceplates will fit your 360 just like the original faceplate that came with your 360 and also be easy to install. Cosmetically they are pleasing to look at.

The construction of each faceplate is identical to the original faceplate except the spring clips used on the memory stick doors appear to be of a lesser grade than those of the original.

Installation of the faceplates was much easier than the original (to my surprise - woohoo) but the skins were a bit of a challenge as the adhesive used on the skins is a bit "too sticky" which makes repositioning the skin during the installation on your 360 harder than it needs to be (but NOT impossible).

NOTE: I combined the skins from one package with the faceplate from the other.

Well, I believe the images speak for themselves as the faceplates are SWEET and they are very deserving of your hard earned cash. Head to your local retailer and get GEARED up.

Later..

Very nice... I agree that the skins should be with the other faceplate. The generic logo should have some skins maybe showing the wall with the torn and ripped posters as seen in the original trailer.

man, you know there is some serious profit being made on these faceplates (though they are hard to resist...)
