HIDEF.COM - Pirates: At Worlds End Review!

"Pirates: At Worlds End" opened this past weekend and the 3rd movie is the worst. Why?

For starters the movie is too long at 2 hours and 45 minutes, nearly 3 hours with trailers. First off the pacing is fairly slow as with the last film but the worst parts of the movie come from the lack of realization for the main characters and plot as a whole. If you are easily amused you might find this movie good, but if you expected a better movie than the last, you are out of luck.

The heart of the movie focuses on Lord Cutler Beckett’s control of Davy Jones as he uses Jones to rules the seas and wipe out pirates. With Beckett in control of Jones, Jones becomes “weak and pathetic”, no longer the scary entertaining dude he was in the last movie. Bill Nighy’s performance as Davy Jones is nothing short of amazing and not utilizing Jones in this finale is disappointing especially if you like good bad guys. Beckett’s control of Jones forces all of the Pirate Captains to come together to take on Beckett and Jones. The decision to take on Beckett is decided during a meeting of the Brethren after they elect a Pirate King. The counsel elects Elizabeth Swan (because of Sparrow) which turns in the movie into a joke (unfortunately) and kills one of the better parts of the entire movie. Will Turners role in this movie is reduced to his torment over having witnessed Elizabeth kissing Jack near the end of the last movie. Will only becomes a factor in the very end of At Worlds End.

Captain Jack Sparrow (our favorite pirate) is toned down quite a bit therefore is not as funny or bizarre as he was in the first two films. Jack has been banished to Davy Jones locker and the locker is NOT what one would expect. Sure the Locker is HELL for Jack but at the same time the Locker is silly right along with how Jack tries to cope with being in said Locker. The whole scene tries to come off as funny but fails on many levels (and then some).

Chow Yun-Fat joins the cast as one of the Pirate Captains (Captain Sao Feng), but his part in the movie is not “realized at all” making him dull and not very interesting at all. In fact he (Chow) tries to hard to come off as a Pirate thug who has some sense of honor and humor. To make things worst he dies early in the picture which begs the question: Why was he even in the movie? Chow’s appearance did nothing for At Worlds End because his Martial Arts are NEVER on display. I know Chow and Jet Li want to become real actors by shedding their Martial Arts persona but I do not think that is a good idea at all.

Tia Dalma, the voodoo woman who aids Jack in Dead Mans Chest (gives him the jar of dirt after being marked for death) and also offers a way to bring Jack back from Davy Jones Locker turns out to be Calypso. Apparently the Pirate Captains bond Calypso to human form (with the help of Jones) so she could not cause trouble anymore. Calypso is the woman who broke Jones heart and she is also out for Vengeance. The scene is which Jones confronts Calypso is one of the best in the movie. Calypso should have been a powerful character in the movie and turns out to be a dud once Barbosa releases Calypso from her human form (Barbosa hoped to use her against Jones and Beckett) as she never helps the Pirates and never takes revenge on the Pirates. Again, why tease us with Calypso if they never planned to exploit the character?

The movie does tie up most loose ends as they attempt to bring the Trilogy to an end but the ending feels forced which makes sense if you consider that Pirates was not a Trilogy to begin with. They only came up with the 2nd and 3rd movies after the 1st movie did better than expected.

I will not spoil the ending as the movie does end on a decent note but after 2 hours and 45 minutes I did NOT even CARE. Just wanted to hit the restroom, go home and play some HALO 3.
