HIDEF.com: Superbad Review!

Everyone once in a while a comedy comes along that is so RAW and so Uninhibited that the movie is both shocking and pleasing at the same time. Daze and Confused and American Pie were the last two “coming of age” movies to blow us away with the “WOW” factor and “Superbad” simply outclasses them both with its sexual based humor and outrageous characters. Coming into the movie I knew the flick was going to be funny but NOTHING can prepare you for the madness created by Evan Tanner and Seth Rogen (writers and producers). Evan and Seth are comedic geniuses who have already earned their rightful place next to two more comedic geniuses: Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park and the absolutely outrageous Team America (“America Fuck ya” – sorry but I had to say that). Is Superbad this FUNNY? YES, the movie is Funnier then both American Pie and Dazed and Confused. Surprised? So am I…

Superbad stars Michael Cera as Evan and Johan Hill as Seth (from Accepted and Grandma’s Boy). Evan and Seth are childhood friends who will soon be split up as they head for different colleges next year (Seth failed to get accepted to Dartmouth). As their Senior Year comes to an end both boys are obsessed with finally getting laid with the girls of their dreams via their plan to provide alcohol for an upcoming party. Seth’s obsession is completely and totally “out of control”. His every waking moment evolves around the female genitalia with comments so vulgar and raw that I cannot repeat in this review (seriously). I am not just talking about a few comments; I am talking rivers of the stuff. His rants and total disregard for the opposite sex is “astounding” and totally reminds me of Randal (played by Jeff Anderson) in Clerks 2 as both characters have no regard for the feelings of others and through this carelessness provide some of the funniest and comical moments in movie history. Evan is sort of a “70’s Show” reject with his dull corduroy pants, retro haircut and shyness. Evan is focused on finally getting with Becca, the girl of his desires and not much else matters to him except keeping a secret from Seth. I am not going to discuss the details of the movie much but one bit involving a certain someone’s obsession with penises earlier in their life is so creative and ridiculously funny; your stomach will hurt from laughing so DAMN HARD (they even provide an encore of this little bit during the credits; so do not leave right away). It is the funniest penis bit I have even seen.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse plays Fogell, a close friend of Even and Seth who has the means to provide the alcohol for the “must attend” party. This is Christopher’s first movie role and his debut is completely successful. This kid has a definite future in movies (I tell you). His character in Superbad is quirky, nerdy and unpretentious. His intro in the movie is classic as he enters Evan’s and Seth’s cooking class and says, “What’s up Gangsta’s”? Yes the line is played out but he projects such enthusiasm into the greeting that you cannot help laughing and instantly like the Character at the same time. Fogell is the man with the plan. His plan to acquire a fake ID under the assumed name “McLovin” is classic and also the key to Evan and Seth having the time of their lives at the party to take place later in the evening. Their quest for alcohol consumes the remainder of the movie (not a bad thing) and drives the plot to new heights. When McLovin is knocked out during the robbery of the liquor store, two bumbling cops show up to provide the final piece in this comedic masterpiece. Seth Rogen (40 year old Virgin and Knocked Up) and Bill Hader (Knocked Up and Hotrod) play two silly cops that take being irresponsible to new levels and I mean new levels. Their hijinks are legendary in this movie. One of my favorite scenes is when they are drinking with “McLovin” and having a shooting contest by seeing who can hit the stop sign (while drinking beer). Suddenly they all hear a siren and Officer Michaels (Seth Rogen) says, “cops” and then all 3 jump in the car and speed away (beer bottles falling of the car). While McLovin is hanging with the cops Even and Seth continue their quest for alcohol and through a strange and funny sequence of events, end up at a party with plenty of booze.

Superbad is down right smart, funny and even has a conscience. The movie does an excellent job in the end of showing that women should NOT perceived as play-things or sexual toys for little boys to amuse themselves and also says that it is ok for a guy to say “no’’ *(for his own moral reasons). The movie also shows that one does not have to always give into “peer pressure” and that going to college a virgin is not a bad thing. Enough from me… Go see Superbad and enjoy one of the funniest movies you will EVER see. 
