Thumbs down Comcast High Definition Channel List

Comcast offers the best HD Experience in terms of "image quality" as their signals are ground based (coax), are encoded at a higher bitrate then DIRECTV/DISH and do not suffer from degradation due to environment conditions in space (such as solar flares) or distance between the "satellite dish" and the satellite. The list below is for the San Jose/San Francisco Bay Area. Locals will be different in all regions but the Expanded and Premium channels are available in most areas. Check the programming in your local area. Comcast can be reached at 1-800-945-2288 or Comcast Home.

To receive HD channels you must have a Comcast HD Receiver or Comcast HD DVR. By law the cable company must supply local channels in HD at no additional cost but you must rent the HD Receiver for 5.99 a month or rent the HD DVR for 11.95 per month. As for the remaining channels, if you subscribe to the channel in your cable package, you will receive the High Definition Version of the channel at no additional cost.

Example: If you receive ESPN in Standard Definition, then you will also receive ESPN in HD. Same goes for HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, Starz, TNT, MTV and Discovery HD Theater.

INHD is a free channel regardless of your package and UHD is part of the Gold Tier.

I recommend the Motorola 6412 HD DVR for the following reasons:

-Dual Tuners

-120GB Hard Drive for 60 hours of Standard Definition Programming or 15 hours of High Definition Programming

-Complete DVR/PVR functions: Record (two channels at once), rewind, fast forward and pause.

-Multiple IO: USB, Firewire, eSATA and Ethernet

-Multiple Outputs: HDMI, Component, Composite, S-Video, Coax, Analog Audio jacks, Optical Jack for Dolby Digital 5.1 and SPDIF Coax for Dolby Digital 5.1
