New Horizons probe delivers the most detailed view of Jupiters "Little Red-Spot"!
The New Horizons probe took some amazing images of Jupiter during it's pass-by of the planet on it's way to Pluto back in Feb. New Horizons sports the latest and greatest in Cameras enabling the spacecraft to snap images from a distance of over 1 million miles. The Multispectral Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC) is a state of the art color camera which provided the above image of Jupiter's "little red-spot" (hard to believe the spot is the same size as Earth). Many of the images released this week were taken from a distance of 1.4 million miles (the close encounter with Jupiter allowed the probe to accelerate to 50,000 miles per hour using the planets gravity, shaving 3 years off the trip to Pluto) providing the most detailed images of Jupiter and especially the moon Io. The probe actually captured an active volcanic eruption on Io which spewed gases 200 miles above the north pole of the moon. These instruments are truly amazing and make me feel good about my tax dollars.
