Japanese Hiccup in Theatrical Release Schedule
GuideToHomeTheater.com reports that Japan may see movies in HD before they catch them in the theaters:

![]() go on... So many players and computers can get around this already. I think the amount of people actively searching for these products for import will be negligible. I think it's safe to say that those with all the latest in HD are the same people that are still going to the movies. More often than not, the movie you want to see in HD, you'll still want to see on a theater screen if you can.

The vast majority of the Japanese population is unable to derive much entertainment from Hollywood (or other English-language) movies without Japanese subtitles. Not only that, but Japanese consumers are far less interested in cheap knock-offs and copies than are most North Americans. Put that together, and you've got a market that basically doesn't need or really want to have or make pirated copies of Region 1 titles.
I wouldn't be surprised if this normalization of region coding benefits those studios that want to be able to export Japanese titles to North America, though. |
