Jason Hall Clarifies "The Unforgettable" Film Project
Hello, NewsHound here!
I saw an article on joystiq.com about the Director of "The Cell" getting on board to direct the movie "The Unforgettable" and something about it didn't make sense to me.
I had heard about this project before but I did not know there was a video game attached to it, and now suddenly I am reading an article suggesting that the movie is based on the SEGA game called "Condemned: Criminal Origin's..?"
Being the NewsHound that I am, I wanted to get the scoop on this so I e-mailed Jason Hall and asked him this question:
"Is the Unforgettable really based on the video game Condemned?"
His response is posted below:

Quote:
Not exactly,
Recently, an announcement was made in The Hollywood Reporter that I am involved in producing a film (along with Basil Iwanyk and David Goyer) for Warner Bros. called "The Unforgettable" and that Director Tarsem Singh is now attached.
All of this is true, however I have noticed that the websites that are reporting the story have been unintentionally misrepresenting the film as a derivative work based on the "Condemned" video game published by SEGA.
To be clear, "The Unforgettable" is NOT a film derived from "The Condemned" video game.
Let me explain:
"The Condemned" video game was derived from a story/universe/bible (referred to as "Species X' or "Iniquity") that Nathan Hendrickson and I created. The game "Condemned" is an interpretation and unique take on the original concept and source material. The team at Monolith added many new and different elements to their take on the core fiction in order to make the best game experience possible and not be hampered by the limitations of any other medium's concern. Monolith told their own story, the game's story, a unique story suitable for great gameplay - set in their interpretation of the core concept and universe that Nathan and I had come up with.
"The Unforgettable" is a film that is also derived from the source story/universe/bible (refered to as "Species X' or "Iniquity") that Nathan Hendrickson and I created. The script and film concept is a solely unique interpretation on the original source materials and everyone involved with the creative aspect of the film (such as Kurt Sutter, the script writer) has added many new and different elements to the original core source material in order to create the best film story experience possible and not be hampered by the limitations of any other medium's concern.
So again, "The Unforgettable" is its own story, a cinematic story, a unique story suitable for great and purely narrative entertainment- set in the writers (and Director's, and studio's) interpretation of the core concept and universe that Nathan and I had come up with. It is not the game's story - at all.
In fact, the "Condemned" game only needed to barely scratch the surface of the deep universe we created in order to tell its story effectively - because in the GAME, the thing that needed to be stressed was narrative ways of supporting GREAT GAMEPLAY - which Condemned had a ton of. The film “The Unforgettable” has had to go much deeper than that, because gameplay is not a concern, solely strong narrative is.
So in summary: the film and the game are only related in that they both were derived from the same founding concept, however the relation ends there and they both have taken quite different forms, suitable for effectiveness in their respective mediums.
The best way to describe their relationship would be as "distant cousins" as opposed to "brothers."
It is important to note that the film effort for the core concept actually started BEFORE the "Condemned" video game was even conceived. It has just taken longer for the film to be produced.
