China has been hard at work creating their own High Definition Optical Disk format. The new media called CH-DVD is a slight variation on the HD-DVD format, in fact the two formats are the same except for the Content Protection Scheme. With this new development it appears HD-DVD is receiving a "little" unexpected help from the land of piracy especially if the two formats band together.

The format is based off that of HD DVD and is physically very similar to HD DVD discs, down to the blue laser. However, CH-DVD does contain some unspecified Chinese-owned intellectual property. In an effort to address China's already rampant piracy scene, the CH-DVD format will also contain "advanced copy protection technology." The group does not specify exactly what that technology will be, but it could simply be the same (and somewhat unsuccessful) AACS that HD DVD currently employs.
