Computerandvideogames has an article with Peter Jackson's agent who discusses the real reason Fox and Universal bailed from the Project: They wanted MS and BUNGIE to accept less profits. The project is still moving forward as we can see from the HALO shorts that Neil (the director) and Peter (producer) continue to produce for Microsoft and Bungie, but will the movie finally happen soon? We all really hope so and with HALO 3's recent performance and affect on the rest of the entertainment industry (Movies sales and TV rating dropped at the end of Sept) we should see Master Chief on the big-screen soon enough.

Prep work on the Halo film continues, Kamins tells Variety, mostly thanks to the involvement of exec producers Jackson and Walsh. Most of the pre-production is being done at their visual effects studios in New Zealand, Weta Digital and Weta Workshop, so there will be no stalling.
Both of the studios who backed the flick abruptly pulled out. Rumours say the studios were concerned over a budget rising above $135 million, but Kamins says disputes came after Fox and Universal tried to lower Microsoft's profit margins.
