CES 2008: DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance)!

DLNA MOTORHOME CES 2008

LINE TO SEE DEMOS

At CES I spent most of the show running all of the demos for the DLNA group. DLNA is standard that uses UPnP to guarantee interoperability between media devices. Essentially DLNA devices can discover each other and share/exchange content. We used a 44 foot mobile home to show off DLNA compliant devices such as the Promise Technology NS4300N RAID 5 NAS Media Server, Sony Cybershot (with Wifi for sharing), HP C7280 Wireless Printer, Nokia N95, Nokia N810 Internet Tablet, Sony Wireless Music Player and Zyxel DMA-100 Digital Media Player/Renderer. The NS4300N was used for steaming digital content (pictures, music and video) from the JVC (living room) and Zyxel (bedroom) Media Players and also the Sony Wireless Music Player (in Bathroom). The Sony Cybershot has Wi-Fi and allows you to instantly share images without the need for a PC. You simply share them with a few button presses and then use the Digital Media Player such as the JVC or any other from Buffalo, Dlink, etc to view the images. We had a HP Wireless Printer that is DLNA certified. I used the Nokia N95 to print images by sending them directly from the phone to the printer. The image quality of the N95 is awesome. 5 MP, auto focus and flash. Next I use the N810i to stream content from the NS4300N to the Zyxel Digital Media Player. The N810i functions as a control point allowing to tell the Media Player where to retrieve content. You simply select the Media Server from the list, then select the renderer you want to use to play the content. The N810i acts like a sophisticated remote control. I love this device! BTW: The N95 also functions as a control point allowing me to perform the same tasks as the N810i. In all DLNA is coming together with more and more devices becoming available. Stay tuned for more in the near future..

Here is some press regarding my demos:

Quote:
LAS VEGAS – Outside the Las Vegas Convention Center, a technician snapped a photo with a Sony Cybershot camera, pressed a couple of buttons and transmitted the photo wirelessly to a media server, which passed it along to display on a TV screen.
A minute later, he took another shot with a Nokia N95 camera phone and sent it to a nearby HP printer – again without wires.

Gadget makers gather today at the opening of the Consumer Electronics Show, repeating their annual resolution to rid the world of the countless miles of wires lurking behind home entertainment centers – particularly the wires climbing up to that otherwise sleek flat panel TV.

This year, there are signs that wires really could start disappearing. The products that technician (sorry guys, removed my name) showed off yesterday are available to consumers and certified by the Digital Living Networking Association to be compatible with other DLNA-certified products from any manufacturer.
