A few days ago I talked about Toshiba's and Microsoft's BIGGEST MISTAKE in the entire HD WAR: Not including an HD-DVD Drive internally for the 360 in mid to late 2006. If Toshiba had helped Microsoft to include the HD-DVD drive in the 360, the war would have been much different and they would have not needed to rely on studios like WB. Now a rumor is floating, a rumor that I already started to discuss weeks ago and one that makes sense if Microsoft wants to win the CONSOLE WAR. Microsoft is rumored to be working on a Blu-Ray add-on or internal Blu-Ray drive for the 360. Microsoft really needs to make this happen very SOON or they will lose this WAR to the PS3 as they finally have some games on the horizon and the PS3 is the Blu-Ray player to own! Is Microsoft going to make the right decision this time? XBOX 360 has been doing very well but Microsoft is now at "critical path" and they need to slow Sony's momentum and kill it FAST. Sony's decision to include the Blu-Ray drive in the PS3 is the best and worst decision ever made. Why? The worst part is that the lesser format won because of the PS3 and the best part is that Sony guaranteed sales of the PS3 to non-gamers if Blu-Ray won the format war because of the PS3. Sony weathered the storm of HUGE LOSSES in the first year and is now poised to run rampage in the console war. These next few weeks or months will be very interesting for Microsoft and the XBOX 360.
Now, people are going to argue that Microsoft is really counting on Digital Content. This is VERY TRUE but Digital Content will not rule our lives until the next few years. Content purchased on the Marketplace cannot be viewed from another 360 or other devices. The quality of the HD content is more like really good 480p material as the bit-rates are still not sufficient to compete with HD-DVD or Blu-Ray encoded material. The Video Marketplace is an excellent start for SD/HD Digital Downloads but still far from taking over the surface. Stay Tuned as this shit should get really interesting very SOON.
