Microsoft discontinues HD-DVD, drops price to 50 bones!

Microsoft on Saturday officially exited the HD-DVD business some 5 days after Toshiba quits. Since HD-DVD is slow fading away, they have dropped the price to an amazing 50 bones in many regions. If you are considering HD-DVD player, buy the 360 version, get King Kong free and the 5 additional movies (4 days left), not to mention the entire library will be sold at cheap prices over the next few months. Would you rather spend 400+ bones on a PS3 or other BLU home player or send 50 bones on the 360 Drive then spend 300 bones on tons of movies. Remember, the HD-DVD collection thus far is NO JOKE. You can always get the PS3 or Home Player later in the year when prices drop (hopefully)..

Quote:
As a result of recent decisions made by Toshiba, Hollywood studios, and retailers, Microsoft plans to withdraw from HD DVD. Xbox will no longer manufacture new HD DVD players for the Xbox 360, but we will continue to provide standard product and warranty support for all Xbox 360 HD DVD Players in the market. As we stated earlier, we do not believe this decision will have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace. HD DVD is one of the several ways we offer a high definition experience to consumers and we will continue to give consumers the choice to enjoy digital distribution of high definition movies and TV shows directly to their living room, along with playback of the DVD movies they already own.

Beginning today, in most regions, you can pick up the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player for an estimated price of $49.99 /€49.99 (and equivalent local currencies).

Supports existing HD DVD movie discs (more than 400 titles currently available in the US and 1,000 internationally) – many of which are combo discs that also include the DVD versions of the film
Includes the Xbox 360 Media Remote Control (a $20 value – US ERP)
Includes the King Kong HD DVD (a $20 value – US ERP) (Available in North America Only)
Plays standard DVDs, allowing you to have a game and a movie ready to play at all times
Provides an additional USB port for your Xbox 360 and includes USB 2.0 cable
Plus, for another 4 days, the offer to get 5 free movies (US only) is still valid, so you get a great deal no matter how you look at it.

It would be a good argument if cheaper prices were not the way to go. You can get a lot more bang for your buck going HD-DVD and building on the near 300 titles and then wasting money on a 400.00 player and 30.00 movies LATER in the year. And my friend, cheap is good. Not everyone can afford to spend 400 bones on a player plus 30 bones per movie. HD-DVD was headed in the right direction for mass adaption with MAXIMUM VALUE and now all of that is gone as price gouging is about to begin.. Do not be mistake, BLU begins absolutely nothing NEW to the table, NOTHING what so ever expect high cost and lazy studios that deliver less for MORE which apparently is something the entire BLU fanbase LOVES.

He's right about this one. I'd much rather pay 19 bucks or 15 bucks or even lower for some high definition movies than turn around in the same isle and pick up the same movie for 29.99 and more. Then have to go buy something that plays it on top of that. I'm going to rack up myself. And like I said, if I can find a way to burn them I'll still be able to stream it.
