Super Perfection XLI
In a time where dominant NFL teams seem to be a thing of the past, I feel a collision course of history approaching far off on the horizon. I have read numerous sports columns and watched more sports commentary shows over the first 8 weeks of the season than most humans imagine could be possible, but so far no one has dared to dream. Allow me to be so bold. The 18-0 Indianapolis Colts vs. The 18-0 Chicago Bears in SuperBowl XLI.

As much fun as it would be to watch a Super Bowl battle of the unbeatens, I just don't see it happening. Chicago already threw down one stinker, although fortunately for the Bears they were playing Arizona at the time and escaped with a win anyway, but I really don't think Grossman is capable of finishing out the regular season without another performance of horridly epic proportions, and I don't think the Bears will be so lucky again if that happens. Specifically, looks to me like the November 12 game at the Giants is a likely candidate for marking the end of Chicago's undefeated run this year. Even if they avoid the loss in New York, though, there just doesn't seem to be any way Tom Brady will be outdone at home by Rex on Thanksgiving weekend. Finally, with respect to the Bears, I note that Brett Favre comes to town on New Year's Eve for the last game of the regular season and for what might be the future Hall-of-Famer's last NFL game. Anybody else think that under the circumstances, and especially if in addition to those factors the Bears are 15-0 and he has a chance to spoil a division rival's chance at history, that the Head Cheese Head might be a little pumped up? I remember the last time Favre was in an emotional situation like that -- it was right after his father died, and I watched him dissect the (admittedly bad) Raiders in front of a national audience. I smell deja vu cooking. Anyway, I think the Bears finish, at best, 14-2 (poor Bears! ).

Similarly, let's wait until after the Colts make their usually-ending-badly trip to play the Patriots before we start talking about Indy's chances for running the table. Oh, hey, looky-there -- that game is this weekend! Don't forget, the Colts also have tough trips to Dallas and Jacksonville left on the schedule, and the Bengals are coming to town next month for a track meet. Oh yeah, and some McNabb guy is visiting the dome on Thanksgiving weekend. I'm not saying the Colts will lose all or most of those games, but looks like they've got anything but a creampuff schedule coming up, and those tough games one after another will wear down the best of teams. There's a good reason or two or ten only one team has ever made it through an NFL regular season undefeated.

All that said, it's fun to dream!

Yeah Dah-Dee it was just that, a dream. In these times of horrible games and crappy teams a sports fan has to dream to maintain interest. I seriously think the Colts have a shot even though Chicago has been beaten. The Cowboys do not look great and Jacksonville has been beaten by Houston not once, but twice now. This is starting to look possible for the Colts but we have to take into account the Tony Dungy sit down effect. Wait til week 15 when he sits his players with two games left and watch the world explode at his decision.

Seems the only thing that can stop the Colts is their Run defense and a poor performance from Payton Manning in the AFC championship game. I hate to say this publicly (i have said it a million times before privately) Payton Manning is the Dan Marino of this generation. I just do not see him winning a SuperBowl.......EVER.
