NYTimes praises Wii!

In addition to giving GoW some love in his "The Year in Review - Video Games", Seth at the NYTimes, praises for the Wii:

Best Job of Bringing Gaming Back to the Masses

Quote:
Nintendo Wii. If anyone in the game world can be called visionary, it is the senior executive team at Nintendo. Satoru Iwata, Shigeru Miyamoto and company realized that since the 1980s gaming had largely devolved from mass-market entertainment (like Pac-Man and Galaga) to niche hobby for hard-core young men. The Wii breaks that mold beautifully; it’s the first game system in decades that a family can enjoy together. If my 61-year-old mother can play it, anyone can.

He also gives Wii Sports "Game of the Year". I disagree a little on this (not major, but a little). Wii Sports should get "Casual Game of the Year" while Gears of War is "clearly" game of the year.

Quote:
What is gaming supposed to be all about? How many pixels are on the screen? Technical mumbo jumbo like memory throughput and high dynamic-range lighting? No. Gaming is supposed to be about fun, and Wii Sports delivered more fun more quickly than anything else I played in 2006. (Helping kill the evil god C’Thun in World of Warcraft was pretty cool too, but that took dozens of hours of practice.) Within minutes of picking up the Wii controller, you and your most game-phobic friends and relatives are laughing and smiling while playing tennis, sinking birdies and trying to bowl that elusive 300 game. Good times.

Check the rest here.

I definately think Gears should have gotten Game of the Year, or maybe Zelda TP

However, Wii Sports is a ton of fun and I can reasoning behind why they picked it. I own a Wii and almost everyone who has picked up a controler and played any of the games (though most often bowling or tennis), seems to love it instantly.

It has that instant gratification factor that you dont see very often in games. While Gears takes a bit longer to get the full gratification, less than something like Zelda, but still more than Wii Sports.

Ive had fun multiplaying gears with friends over live, but I have had just as much, if not more, multiplaying tennis, and coming up with drinking games involving bowling
