I was informed by Major Nelson that Microsoft will release Video Marketplace Sales numbers next week at CES (I will be at the announcement if possible). I recently discussed the Video Marketplace in our HD Content Year in Review. I have purchased a lot of material from the Marketplace, both SD and HD. In HD I have rented V for Vendetta, Poseidon and Superman Returns. I have also been watching Star Trek The Original Series, Enterprise and UFC Fights in HD.
Ease of use and HD Content (Movies and Shows) are the main reasons for the success of the Video Marketplace. Using an HDTV that is already connected to the 360 (via component or VGA) is as simple as it gets. Press 3 buttons and you have your content, ready to watch when you are (movies must be watched with in 14 days). XBOX LIVE Video Marketplace is the perfect digital content delivery vehicle. The 1 year head start with 360 and the 4 year head start with XBOX LIVE allowed Microsoft to beat Sony with the deployment of a downloadable Movie and TV Show content system. Considering that Sony owns Sony Pictures, Columbia and MGM, they must be fairly embarrassed as they were outclassed by a software company.
With half of all new 360's connected to the LIVE, I can imagine the sales are fairly solid re-enforcing that the downloadable content model is here to stay. Growth of XBOX LIVE and more HD content will quickly solidify the Video Marketplace as the Premiere Digital Distribution Network.
Stay tuned for news directly from CES next week (LIVE from Sin City!!)..
