Movie Studios Give Okay To Download Technology

The Associated Press is reporting that Hollywood studios have given their stamp of approval to technology that will add a digital lock to DVDs burned in a computer or at a retail kiosk. The Qflix content scrambling system (CSS) developed by Sonic Solutions Inc. will give consumers more options, although they will still need blank DVDs and compatible DVD burners to use it.

(MSFT)'s Windows Media system, a service could specify that a given title can be burned no more than two times. Sonic has been working for three years to develop the technology and get studios to agree to amend the CSS license to allow a "download to burn" option.
