Blu-Ray gaining traction?

Hi All,

While I appreciate that most of the moderators on here prefer the HD-DVD format, and I may even be inclined to agree, I'm a bit disappointed at what seems to be an increasing bias at the expense of information.

For the last month or so, it seems like week after week, HD-DVD gets one or two new titles, while Blu-Ray gets 6+. Is their "content advantage" starting to become an issue? How come noone is commenting on this?

Also, I came across some fairly well publicized sales data showing that, in the new year, Blu-Ray was greatly outselling HD-DVD. How come noone wrote about that here?

As an early adopter who is dying to buy one or the other of these technologies, I would greatly appreciate more information on the topic, regarldess of your inherent biases toward one format or the other.

Thx.

Well in a way you sorta answered your own question. Look at the amount of titles available for Blu-Ray compared to HD DVD . It should be outselling HD DVD. With the PS3 it was bound to be selling better than HD DVD. That is only because it has more titles to sell. If everyone contacted these studios and supported HD DVD they will/would start making them available to that format. I think that if you even out the titles and base sales numbers on what HD DVD has exactly compared to Blu-Ray HD DVD is probably outselling Blu-Ray at least 2 to 1. Now is it affecting HD DVD? Yes the longer the studios hold off HD DVD the more Blu Ray Will grow. Its sad but without knowing any insider info it almost seems like HD DVD is stuck in the mud and Blu Ray has called AAA.

The porn industry is behind HD-DVD, that's all that is needed for HD-DVD to succeed.

Any update? Still haven't seen the latest and greatest sales data. Is BR kicking HD-DVDs a$$ now? I am dying to buy SOMETHING. Still not sure which way to go, but leaning toward BR at the moment. Even with PS3 failing miserably, I'm not sure Universal alone, can even the content war. Seems more likely to me that Universal will defect to BR before 4+ studios will defect to HD-DVD, no?

Waiting on some real numbers still, but it appears that Blu-Ray had a decent January which pretty much means nothing. With over 1 million PS3 in the market, not one Blu-Ray title has sold over 8000 copies in a month. There are roughly a little under 200,000 HD-DVD players including the 360 add-on. HD-DVD sales are very consistent with top titles averaging 4000 to 5000 per month. With Blu-Ray owning marketshare via the PS3 the numbers should be VERY high instead of just catching HD-DVD. True, more studio support is needed but I still believe Fox and or Disney will jump ship in the next year in the name of more profit. Blu-Ray is not making money for these guys and Universal is doing ok due to demand on their titles. Most store never have the top titles because they are always sold out. I can find any Blu-Ray title quickly at any store. Last week I have to go over 25 miles to Frys in Palo Alto to claim the last version of The Departed HD-DVD in the Silicon Valley. Every store I visited has The Departed Blu-Ray in stock (several copies).

Expect an article soon...

Any sales data yet?

Any sales data for Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD yet? What's the latest? If there is no accurate data, opinions would be welcome....seems like tide has shifted some in favor of BR, based in part, on more releases. Is that so?

Hey Matty, still waiting on the groups to provide accurate sales numbers. In the meantime, I will put together an article based on everything that has occurred in the last few months (PS3 impact, increased Blu-Ray sales, Hybrid Drive factor, HD-DVD/Blu-Ray Market share vs Number of estimated titles sold, etc.) Expect this by the end of the week.

More HD DVD titles than Blu-Ray

I've been using DVD Aficionado for some time to manage my DVD collection and just started recently with my HD DVDs.

They list 650 HD DVD titles (including announced) and 687 discs as of today. DVD Aficionado HD DVD

There are 480 Blu-Ray titles listed. DVD Aficionado Blu-Ray

I'm not sure how they count "titles" but I'm guessing that variants of the same film from different countries are counted separately. I believe that a few may have not been officially announced yet, but many of the past such pre-announcements have come true so far.

I'm thinking that the "disks" number would account for multi-disc sets like The Planet Earth.

I also use the DVD Profiler program. They are always delayed by about a week in adding newly-announced titles.

They show 522 HD DVDs (they only list officially announced and already released titles and they use actual UPC codes as database keys).

DVD Profiler lists 437 Blu-Ray releases.

Assuming that each counts both formats consistently, it looks like there are a significant more HD DVD titles world-wide and that the statement that there would be at least 600 HD DVD releases this year will easily come true.

I haven't tallied up the studio data from DVD Aficionado, but I've heard that there are many more studios/distributors (not necessarily all major ones) behind HD DVD world-wide, in the US and especially Europe.
